The Civilian Equivalent To The Police Body Cam Has Arrived
Civilian recordings of police interactions are not a new idea to our society. However, an app called ‘Police’ allows a person to create a ‘Shortcut’ on their iPhone and say minimal words, such as: “Hey Siri, I’m getting pulled over” to begin recording a police interaction. Those few words will send a text to a predetermined contact in your phone that you are getting pulled over. Your iPhone will turn on Do Not Disturb mode and begin recording using your front facing camera. Your location will also be available to a predetermined contact. Once recording is finished, the Police app will send the video via text or email to a predetermined contact and save it to Dropbox. The creator, Robert Petersen, stated: “It seemed to me that if you’re getting pulled over it couldn’t hurt to have a recording of the incident…” “The police these days in many places have body cams, so this could be the civilian equivalent.”
On an iPhone, any user can create a shortcut to meet a variety of different wants or needs. You can program a shortcut on your iPhone to do your morning routine of turning on/off the lights, turning on a coffee pot, starting your car, etc. The Police Shortcut is already created for you. You only need to put in your predetermined contacts. Simple as that. This Police App has inspired other creators to identify possible areas where this type of technology could be used, such as: walking to your car by yourself, being followed by a persistent Ex, or other situations of feeling unsafe.
